We are pleased to feature Rear Admiral Peter Andrus this month! Admiral Andrus had a long career in the Navy Reserve and as a pediatric doctor. Now he volunteers at the library and keeps our bookshelves in order!
Tell us a little bit about yourself and where you are from:
I was born in Philadelphia, but grew up in Miami. After active duty in the Navy, I moved to the Houston area and joined the Baylor College of Medicine faculty. For many years I practiced general pediatrics, but when hurricane Harvey flooded us, we decided to move to Austin. My wife and I have two sons and three grandkids who live here.
Why did you decide to volunteer at the library?
I have always been a voracious reader. I enjoy the cheerful staff and volunteers – plus, the exercise! Although bending down while shelving is kind of tough on the old knees.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
In my younger days I loved sailing and scuba diving; recently I have taken up stamp collecting, which I did when I was young. I enjoy spending time with my wife and two dogs (a Dandie Dinmont terrier and a long-haired dachshund) here in Lakeway. We also enjoy spending summers in our cottage at the Finger Lakes in upstate New York.
What do you like to read?
My reading tastes are pretty eclectic and include nautical and crime fiction, biography, and history, both general and military.
