We are delighted to feature volunteer Bob Cleary this month! Bob works in Lakeway’s Friends of the Library Bookstore assisting customers and working alongside Lakeway’s Bookstore Manager Renae Duncan.
Where are you from, and what brought you to the Lake Travis area?
San Diego, I was born and raised a southern California boy. We started visiting Lakeway when my daughter and her husband moved here years ago. When we retired, we moved to our beach house in Baja, Mexico and lived off the grid for a while, but we would spend our summers in Lakeway. We fell in love with the area and eventually moved here.
What are your hobbies?
My hobbies are surfing, sailing, skiing, kayaking, and playing golf, but I haven’t been able to do many of those lately. Right now I spend my time traveling, gardening, reading, and going out to lunch.
What did you do before retiring?
I was in the U.S. Navy for five years, in which time I took 28 trips through the Panama Canal. After my service, I was a teacher for 32 years, teaching kindergarten through 6th grade. My wife was also a teacher for 35 years before retiring.
What do you like to read?
I read about five to ten books a week, mostly espionage and mysteries.
What’s your favorite thing about volunteering in the bookstore?
Watching the kids come in and buy a book or two or three!
