In October 2017 the construction of a new Texas school turned into international news when an unmarked cemetery was unearthed. After months of excavating, archaeologists discovered the remains of 95 people. It was concluded that these people were part of a state-sanctioned convict leasing system, which operated in Texas after the abolition of slavery.
