Volunteer Spotlight: Bob and Susan Million

It’s National Library Lover’s Month and so it’s the perfect time to feature volunteer lovebirds, Bob and Susan Million! Adult Volunteer Coordinator Mariah sat down with the couple to learn more about their relationship and why they choose to spend their time volunteering together at the Friends Bookstore!

How did you two meet?
Susan: We met at work. When we shook hands, time literally stood still. We had an electric connection; the kind you see in the movies.
Bob: It’s true.

Could you tell us a bit about your family?
Susan: We have two grown kids: Bob’s son lives in Florida with his wife and kids and our daughter lives in New York City. We also have a sweet, scruffy terrier named Bonita, who we inherited from my mom.
Bob: We were only supposed to have Bonita temporarily, but somehow we got a little too attached to her, and now she’s ours.

How did you end up volunteering at the West bookstore together?
Bob: Susan had a long history with the library before we started volunteering together.
Susan: Yes, I started out as a member and organizer of one of the library’s book clubs. When I retired, I was a Tech Coach volunteer for a while before finding my happy place in the Lakeway bookstore. When West opened, I saw the need for more volunteers and was excited that Bob and I could work a shift together.
Bob: What won me over was seeing so many families come in together and parents encouraging their children to read. The rich offerings of the library’s programs and services bring in a diverse group of people, which is so beneficial to the community.

Is it true that the couple that volunteers together stays together?
Susan: Yes, of course! Teamwork! It’s a great excuse to get out of the house, do something fun together, and meet new people.
Bob: It’s a fun thing to do together, and we expect the bookstore is only going to get more popular with so much growth in the area.

What’s the last book you fell in love with?
Bob: I’m not as much of avid reader as Susan, but I do read more now that I’m surrounded by books once a week. My favorite books are mysteries, crime novels, and thrillers. Harlan Coben is one of my favorite authors.
Susan: We just read Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan for the Glass of Wine Book Club and I loved it! I listened to it on audio and read it, I highly recommend the audio version!
