Volunteer Spotlight: Tux

We’re highlighting a different sort of volunteer this month, Tux the cat! Tux is an animatronic companion cat that looks, feels, and sounds like the real thing. Tux rides along on the bookmobile, often visiting assisted living facilities to bring joy and comfort to those who are not able to care for a real pet. Volunteer Coordinator Mariah sat down with Tux to hear his story!

How did you start volunteering on the bookmobile?
I was chasing a butterfly when I stumbled upon the bookmobile. The idea of being surrounded by books and helping others discover new stories sounded purrfect to me. Plus, I looked forward to the occasional head scratch or chin rub from appreciative patrons!

What would you say makes you unique?
As a cat, I bring a calming presence and a natural curiosity to bookmobile stops. Patrons often find my demeanor soothing, and they’re intrigued by my enthusiasm for books. Plus, being a cat means I have a keen eye for cozy reading spots.

What are you currently reading?
The Travelling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arikawa. It’s about a cat on a road trip! Need I say more?

Being a cat seems like it would keep you pretty busy. How do you find the time to volunteer?
Balancing my volunteer work with my cat responsibilities involves careful time management and lots of cat naps! After a fulfilling day of volunteering, I like to recharge by lounging in sunbeams and dreaming about my next great read.

Ask for Tux at the circulation desk if you want to meet our furry library mascot!
